JAG'S GET READY TO GO ON THE ROAD TO PLAY SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY AT 7:00 pm SATURDAY NIGHT.

The JAG'S will get back into action this Saturday November 3 with a 7:00 pm start. After a week off with the wild fires that dominated the news and San Diego, both players and coaches are ready to get going again. SBVC has struggled to a 3-5 record so far this season.

They have outstanding receivers and a quality freshman QB. Defensively they are a group that relies on speed and quickness. A solid kicking game and a veteran coaching staff will provide a big challenge for the young JAG'S.

JAG'S FALL TO MESA COLLEGE 14-17 IN NEIGHBORHOOD SHOWDOWN.

The JAG'S traveled crosstown to Mesa College for a neighborhood rivalry game this past Saturday. The game was a microcosim of our 2007 season. The JAG defense came to play forcing Mesa to punt 12 times and serving up EIGHT, 3 and Outs (3 plays and a punt).

Much of the JAG'S success on the night had an EAST COUNTY flair to it. Three of our four recognized Players of the Week are graduates of HELIX HS... Offensive Player KENSLOW SMITH, Defensive Player DERRICK PERRAULT and Big Stick DESMOND JACKSON. Our Punter/FG kicker MARCUS FLORES is from GROSSMONT HS and two key defensive players on the day were TAELOR WORRELL, EL CAPITAN HS and JIMMY VIDANO from STEELE CANYON HS. WORRELL and VIDANO had their best games of the season. Sophomore receiver DEVIAN CARTER from MT. MIGUEL HS caught the game tying touchdown on a fade route with under 2 minutes to play. How about that East County!

Freshman defensive tackle WAYMAN CASEY (University of Tulsa) stepped up with 5 solo tackles and excellent pressure up the middle on the QB. Fellow freshman DERRICK PERRAULT (Helix HS) was a force at the line of scrimmage pressuring both the run and passing game.

The flow of the game began with the JAG'S pushing the Mesa defense down the field and driving the ball through the runing game. KENSLOW SMITH (Helix HS) was a force in both the running and passing game running both the Draw and Inside Zone play with his own physical style.

After a pair of missed FG's (by two different kickers) freshman kicker MARCUS FLORES (Grossmont HS) stepped up and hit two field goals, the longest of which was a 47 yarder. FLORES also dominated the punt game punting 6 times with ZERO net returns.

Other players who stepped up were freshmen center JOSE BAEZ, (Eastlake HS), freshman linebacker SEAN SHAW, (Otay Ranch HS), freshman TE ROBERT ARMSTRONG (Castle Park HS) and freshman long snapper MARC VILLAFLOR (Bonita Vista HS)

It has been a frustrating season for all of us... with 3 weeks to go and a 1-6. In 4 of the 6 losses we were ahead in the game with an opportunity to win. The ball (like the first missed field goal that hit the upright and bounced back) has bounced in strange ways in 2007. But in football, like life you make your own breaks. Our players and coaches are excited for the next three weeks and the opportunity to finish with three wins in a row.

JAG'S TAKE A STEP FORWARD. BEAT VICTOR VALLEY 39-37

This past Saturday the JAG'S earned their first victory of the 2007 season with a wild finish 39-37. The JAG'S moved out to a 16-0 lead in the game only to see a series of odd plays occur that brought the Rams back into the game.

There were many hero's to go around for the JAG'S, the defensive line continues to improve and play at their expected level. Sophomore L.J. BROWN (6'5, 280 lbs / FLORIDA) had his best game of the season with 5 tackles / tackle for loss / four tiped passes and a sack. Fellow sophomore end TORY ROBINSON (6'5 275 lbs / MT. MIGUEL HS) had 10 total tackles / tackle for loss and a fumble forced. Freshman DT WAYMAN CASEY (6'7 315 lbs / UNIV of TULSA) dominated the Ram OL with 3 tackles for loss and 3 sacks on the day. Sophomore DT RYAN KING (6'1 270 llbs / EL CAJON VALLEY HS) had a breakout game with 4 total tackles and a sack. Sophomore DT ALEX OUJI (6'2 255 lbs / BONITA VISTA HS) had two tackles / two sacks and a fumble recovery.

At the LB position, sophomore JIMMY VIDANO (5'10 205 lbs / STEELE CANYON HS) played the game of his life with 13 total tackles / 3 of the tackles were for loss... he dominated play from his position. JIMMY also deep snaps for the JAG'S on PAT/FG and PUNT

In the special teams area our one two punch of kickoff specialist ABLE PEREZ (CASTLE PARK HS) 5 touchbacks (we kick from the 30 yard line, that means ABLE kicks the ball between 75 and 80 yards in the air! Better than most NFL kickers) and freshman MARCUS FLORES (GROSSMONT HS). MARCUS punted in the high 40's and made two more field goals (long of 47 yards). Between the kickoffs and punts we dominated field position. Add in the punt returns of freshman LORENZO FLOYD (5'11 170 lbs / FLORIDA) and the kicking game set the table.

Offensively we are scoring points... sophomore QB DREW WESTLING (6'3 220 lbs / UNIV of TULSA) had another big night, 17 of 31 for 265 yds and four TD's... 3 of the TD's went to sophomore receiver KEVIN PIKE (6'0 170 lbs / HILLTOP HS). PIKE made a spectacular one handed catch in the back of the end zone for his second TD. Sophomore MIKE PAGE (5'8 165 lbs / MSJC) had his best night with 5 catches. Freshman RB KENSLOW SMITH (5'7 190 / HELIX HS) continues to impress as he leads the JAG'S in rushing and total receptions.

It is BYE WEEK for the JAG'S. With four games remaining in the 2007 season we are playing our best football of the season. We will reopen play against the 2-3 San Diego Mesa Olympians in two weeks at Mesa College 5"00 pm.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK DESERT GAME

OFF PLAYER OF THE WEEK: DREW WESTLING (Aliso Niguel HS)Drew bounced back from two rough outings to have a solid game throwing for 2 TD's and 190 yards. He leads the Foothill Conference in passing as of week 5. At 6'3, 220 the soph bounce back from Tulsa continues to improve weekly.

DEF PLAYER OF THE WEEK: NONE. Although there were several solid individual efforts on defense we felt as a staff that no recognition was deserving.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: MICHAEL CORBETT (East Henderson HS)A very fast freshman that came to us late in the summer is still trying to find his way within the team. He has explosive ability and our goal is to involve him more in the second half of the season. He has had an impact in the last two weeks on special teams.

BIG STICK: TORY ROBINSON (Mt. Miguel HS)Tory recorded the big hit of the game with a sack in the fourth quarter... Improving weekly, the last two games have been great for him effort and production wise. The 6'5 275 lbs soph DE has batted down 3 passes, has two sacks and an interception.

JAG’S TAKE A STEP BACKWARDS… LOSE TO FIRST PLACE COLLEGE OF THE DESERT

After three weeks of solid improvement the JAG’S took a major step backwards losing in the Desert 65-24. COD has turned it’s season around from 1-9 in 2006 to 5-0 in 2007. Our kickoff coverage team struggled to contain the Roadrunners allowing Desert to have outstanding starting field position. Oddly enough, we had been the number one kickoff coverage team in the conference prior to the game. Freshman kicker ABLE PEREZ (CASTLE PARK HS) continued to pound the ball into the end zone from 70 yards away but the COD return men brought it out with success.

Punter / Kicker MARCUS FLORES (GROSSMONT HS) made his third field goal of the year and punted them inside the 10 yard line. Excellent coverage by MARC VILLAFOR (BONITA VISTA HS) and MIKE PAGE (PALOMA VALLEY HS). In our return game freshman MICHAEL CORBETT (EAST HENDERSON HS / NORTH CAROLINA) ran a 91 yard kickoff return for the JAG’S.

Offensively the JAG’S moved the ball well and scored points. Sophomore QB DREW WESTLING (15-31, 179 yards and 2 TD’s) bounced back from a tough outing against Chaffey. Sophomore KEVIN PIKE (HILLTOP HS) and Freshman SHELDON GALLOWAY (CLAIREMONT HS) both caught TD passes.

The JAG’S return home for another Foothill Conference game against Victor Valley HS at 5:00 pm in DeVore Stadium.
