In a frustrating game, the JAG’S returned to DeVore Stadium to face the Chaffey Panthers in a Foothill Conference game. For the third time this season the JAG’S moved out to an early lead 17-7 over traditional power Chaffey. As the game flowed, Chaffey continued to establish the run (primarily the outside zone) and went into half time with a 21-17 lead.
The JAG’S battled back with a ground game of their own… freshman RB KENSLOW SMITH (HELIX HS) continues to shine with 3 more TD’s (he leads the Foothill Conference in scoring) while rushing for nearly 150 yards on 20 carries. He had a long burst of 57 yards for a TD in the third quarter. Freshman receiver CURTIS MITCHELL (DAYTONA BEACH, FLORIDA) had his best game of the season with 5 catches… 2 of them were clutch 3rd down conversions. Freshman QB RYAN NELSON (LOYOLA HS, LOS ANGELES) stepped in in the 3rd quarter and moved the team with quick passes and good decisions.
On defense the JAG’S were once again hot and cold. RONNIE RUTLEDGE (MT. MIGUEL HS) came off the bench to intercept a ball and make numerous physical tackles. TYLER ZANOLLI (ALISO NIGUEL HS, ORANGE COUNTY / University of Utah) had the hit of the day with a blast of a receiver over the middle and extended his Conference lead in interceptions to 3. Sophomore DE TORY ROBINSON (MT. MIGUEL HS) had the best game of his career pressuring the QB, intercepting a pass he batted down and making 3 tackles for loss.
In the kicking game, the lone bright spot on the day was the field goal kicking of freshman MARCUS FLORES (GROSSMONT HS). Bouncing back from a tough day the previous Saturday, MARCUS kicked two field goals and punted the Panthers out of bounds on the 3 yard line.
The JAG’S travel to unbeaten 4-0 College of the Desert this weekend for a 5:00 pm start.
