WEEK 3 OPPONENT GROSSMONT PREVIEW FOR 2007 SEASON

GROSSMONT
2006 Record: 10-2
Lost the first and last games of the season.
The Jordan Dynasty figures to continue for the Griffins of Grossmont. Before Mike Jordan took over as head coach in 2006, his father, Dave, had reeled off a 5-year stretch that showed 55 wins against just 7 losses and included the J.C. Grid-Wire national title in 2005.

So Mike comes along and his first team chalks up a 10-2 tab despite a major overhaul of the coaching staff.

Six starters on offense and another half-dozen on the "D" should go a long way toward keeping the Griffs in prominence. Defensive tackle Magnum Mauga , 6-0, 280, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL, is expected back to terrify the opposition. On the opposite side is Matt Moss, 6-4, 275, who earned All-Conference credentials last year and has a motor that won't quit. He already tripped and committed to Texas A&M, where he'll enroll next January. Then, in the middle, is NG Tano Paleafei, 6-2 1/2, 245, who had a tremendous freshman season. ILB Jacob Tauanu'u, 6-1, 240 (PHOTO ABOVE), runs a 4.74 and plays sideline to sideline. He did 22 reps of 225 at the JCFootball.com combine in May. The Griffins' defensive secondary might be their weak link.

Garren Demery, a 5-10, 185-pound bounceback from Arizona, looks like the top RB in what is almost always a blistering offense. Blake Sutton, who sat out last year, is back and may handle the QB chores. He is a lanky 6-4, 180-pounder with experience from the title team. OT C.J. Millenbah, 6-4, 305, was heavily recruited and recently committed to play at the upcoming JC season. A sleeper could be WR Maurice Patterson, 6-3, 190, who has great speed and body control for his size.

"Our coaching staff is settled and we should be improved in almost every aspect," said Jordan, "Plus, I think we had maybe the best freshman recruiting class ever."

SUMMER WEEK ONE IS IN THE BOOKS. HIGH LIGHT ON THE QB'S.

JAG PRACTICE FACILITY

The first week of Summer 2007 is in the books. Player attendance has been great... Wednesday's attendance was 103 players. Highlightning the three QB's:

Sophomore Drew Westling (Aliso Niguel HS / University of Tulsa) has continued his solid play from the Spring semester. He has an excellent grasp of the offense and has stepped his summer effort up to a new level.

Freshman David Ortega (Palo Verde HS, Blythe CA) had a great high school career throwing for over 3,000 yards his senior season as well as 40 TD's. David like all three QB's played in a Spread Shot Gun offense at Palo Verde so he has an excellent feel for the base plays.

Freshman Ryan Nelson (Loyola HS, Los Angeles) is used to competing at a high level with his experience in the large school division in Southern California. The Loyola Cubs have been a spread no huddle team the past three years, winning the CIF Championship two seasons ago.

WEEK 2 OPPONENT PASADENA IS LOADED WITH RETURNING PLAYERS

One of the most athletic and versatile quarterbacks in the California JC system this year is Pasadena QB David Pittman (5-11, 195). He had an excellent spring and has garnered interest from lots of BCS schools and has three offers to his name, but he said his coaches have told him several more are on the way.

"I got offered by UCLA, Arizona State and North Carolina A&T a little while ago," Pittman told JCFootball.com recently. "My coaches said I had a really good spring and some of the coaches from schools that came out to see me have told them they were going to offer after they got back and evaluated everything so I'm expecting several more over the next couple of weeks."

In addition to his offers, Pittman said that USC is recruiting him pretty hard and that schools like Arizona, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia are recruiting him as well.

"I grew up here in Pasadena, but I went to high school back in Georgia," Pittman said. "My dad's job transferred him out there and so me and my mom followed him. I graduated from Brookwood High School (Snellville, Ga.) and my coach and I had a misunderstanding about recruiting so I didn't really get recruited much.

"I got a lot of letters from some Pac 10, Big 12 and SEC schools, but nothing really substantial and then when I graduated I had a decision to make. I wanted to keep playing ball so the most logical choice for me was Pasadena because I had my friends and family out here and the staff here is really good."

As a freshman for the Lancers, Pittman had a solid season leading the offense. He passed for over 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns with only 10 interceptions. He also posted 300 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

With his athleticism and speed (4.48) many try to pigeonhole Pittman as a scrambler or an athlete playing quarterback, but he says that can't be further from the truth.

"I don't think I'm a scrambler," Pittman said. "I'm a pocket-passer until things break down and then I can hurt you with my legs. I'd much rather be known as a threat to hurt defenses as a passer though."

Pasadena had a young team in 2006, but this year they're poised for a big season and Pittman says his main goal is to show the leadership necessary to lead the Lancers to where they want to go.

"I've been reading a lot of books on leadership and studying some major leaders," Pittman said. "One of the books I'm reading is about the African American quarterback and their struggles. It has really opened my eyes to being a leader and what that means.

"I have all the physical stuff down. Like my speed and my footwork and my reads, but I want to be a better leader and that's really what I'm focused on this summer."

Because Pittman qualified out of high school, he can leave anytime and he'll be ready to leave Pasadena in December with three years to play two wherever he ends up.

We'll have more from Pittman as the summer rolls along.

JAGUARS ARE LOOKING FOR LEVERAGE

Dictionary.com explains LEVERAGE as a "POSITIONAL ADVANTAGE". In the picture above, the recevier for the Chargers is aligned near the sidelines, the Corner for the Cardinals has "INSIDE LEVERAGE". In the secondary there are "TWO BRACKETTS" a "MOVING BRACKETT", the Safety and a "FIXED BRACKETT", the Sidelines. The Corner wants to utilize the nearest "BRACKETT" to assist him in covering the receiver.

As a basic rule, the Corner aligns OPPOSITE of the nearest "BRACKETT". Know where your help will come from!

HIGH BALL CARRY IS A KEY TO ELIMINATING TURN OVERS

Carrying the ball HIGH and TIGHT as you see in the photo is the best way to keep the ball for our team. The number one predictor of victory is turnover margin. This past year, Coach Carberry's defense led the FOOTHILL CONFERENCE with a +8 turnover margin.

CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS PROTECT THE BALL ON OFFENSE AND TAKE THE BALL AWAY ON DEFENSE.

THE 3 A's DOMINATE YOUR CHANCE FOR SUCCESS AT SOUTHWESTERN COLLEGE

ACADEMICS - Set your goals high. Know what classes transfer and get them on your schedule. Start early, if you are an incoming freshman, take a minimum of 3 units of transferable work your first summer.

ATTENDANCE - Often times the person that SHOWS UP is the one that succeeds. Be on time and on task in the class room, weight room and practice field.

ATTITUDE - You can only control two things in your life... the ATTITUDE you bring with you and how hard you work.
